What is the Red Scarf Project?


  • The Red Scarf Project, a project of the Orphan Foundation of America, or Orphan.org, collects scarves to send in Valentine's Day care packages to college students who have aged out of foster care. These brave young people are going it on their own and trying to improve their lives and the community by attending college. The care packages are welcome tokens of encouragement to young people who otherwise receive little to no mail. Your scarf should be soft (any material), unisex design, and approximately 60 inches long by 5 to 8 inches wide. Machine washable is a plus, but it is not absolutely necessary. Mail it to: Orphan Foundation of America The Red Scarf Project 21351 Gentry Drive Sterling, VA 20166 ..but not until September 1, 2009-December, 2009. Please read all the info in this blog. FO spotted!

You gotta love stats.  Through my stats I sleuthed and found the first Red Scarf (of which I am aware) completed.  Way to go, Ann, who goes very quietly through the cornfields!  Don't be shy, people.  Step right up and proudly tell us about your completed scarves!  Thank you, Ann.

I still don't have time to fiddle with the buttons -- my apologies.  But I have made a category called "Buttons -Come Here!" which conveniently links to the post with the buttons.  Look under "Categories" on the left sidebar.  Thanks, and knit red scarves!

Yay!

I finished the knitting part of my first scarf. I'm just feeling lazy about the weaving. However, I am working on scarf #2 already.

Yeah!!! I have one done (not photographed yet), finished last night, one almost done (need 1/2 skein of yarn to finish cast off and fringe) and a third that I hope to finish tonight. I'm so glad others are on fire about this too.

I'm almost done with my scarf - 48" long to date in a 2*2 rib & red Nature Wool Chunky (yes, I missed the bit about mashine washable). I hope to finish it by the end of the week.

Also, I have free scarf pattern on my blog that I'd love to offer up for folks to try - I even knit it in red! Maybe a list of links to free scarf patterns would be helpful to those doing this project....?
